Disposable trivet

While I was at the beach for that short time last weekend, I didn't just take loads of photo's. Oh no, I didn't. I also spent some time picking up sticks with Fairy Girl. It was an exacting task and she tired of it reasonably fast - "Do they really all have to be the same size?" Well, mostly.

Now a confession - I have a fascination with drift wood and would bring it all home if the clan didn't insist otherwise. So when we came across loads of driftwood piled on the high tide line, I knew the time had come to make my own disposable trivet, just like I'd seen here a few weeks before!

I'm not going to offend you all by giving you a detailed how-to...... I'm sure the photo's are self explanatory. There's a half knot between each stick, it's knotted at both ends and it's really surprisingly firm and tight. I knotted it up quickly while we were having brekky this morning and there were a few wild guesses - a bridge for the guinea pigs? a hippy style blind? a doily? Ahem!

And the best thing is, I can compost it when it breaks - thats the kind of disposable I like!

Joining in with Creative Friday again this week.

  8. That's such a great idea! I love making stuff from the beach! I've made a shell mobile here (yes, I will take a photo, lol), and now you've inspired me to collect some driftwood! I've never seen any as uniform and straight as yours though!

This is unrelated, but just thought I'd mention that it's a bit hard to see links in your blog posts (such as the one showing where you got the idea for the trivet), because of the colour of the font. Maybe you could make it darker or a brighter colour? Just a suggestion :)

  10. Thankyou for all your kind comments! I thought it was a quick and very nifty idea too.... and yes Aleta and Tanya, I think I might make a few of these as gifts too!

Bonnie, I will give your suggestion some thought - it shows up nice and yellow on my screen but maybe thats because I've already been there. The colour may be different when it hasn't been visited before.

  11. Beautiful trivet, I love driftwood also. We try to bring some home every time we go to the coast, I tuck it throughout my garden , and in bookcase nooks. I will have to remember this trivet craft, we are planning a beach weekend in March. Great post!

  17. Lovely idea. And so simple. Staring me in the face. No driftwood here, but plenty of dead grapevine and fallen box elder branches. Clever girl.
