While I was at the beach for that short time last weekend, I didn't just take loads of photo's. Oh no, I didn't. I also spent some time picking up sticks with Fairy Girl. It was an exacting task and she tired of it reasonably fast - "Do they really all have to be the same size?" Well, mostly.
Now a confession - I have a fascination with drift wood and would bring it all home if the clan didn't insist otherwise. So when we came across loads of driftwood piled on the high tide line, I knew the time had come to make my own disposable trivet, just like I'd seen here a few weeks before!
I'm not going to offend you all by giving you a detailed how-to...... I'm sure the photo's are self explanatory. There's a half knot between each stick, it's knotted at both ends and it's really surprisingly firm and tight. I knotted it up quickly while we were having brekky this morning and there were a few wild guesses - a bridge for the guinea pigs? a hippy style blind? a doily? Ahem!
And the best thing is, I can compost it when it breaks - thats the kind of disposable I like!

That is so clever and gorgeous!!
ReplyDeleteI love this Evi. And I can think of some beachy folk who this would make a wonderful gift for.
ReplyDeleteThanks for passing on your inspired inspiration!
What a lovely trivet.Well done. I'll store that away for future use that's for sure.
ReplyDeleteHow lovely and clever! And that's the kind of disposable I like too!
ReplyDeleteVery original thinking...I want to go back to the beach now and get some driftwood so that I can try it.
ReplyDeleteWht didn't I think of that before! It is charming and what a great gift too. These would also be great for soap holders wouldn't they. Good idea girl!
ReplyDeleteYou are so clever! I love it!
ReplyDeleteThat's such a great idea! I love making stuff from the beach! I've made a shell mobile here (yes, I will take a photo, lol), and now you've inspired me to collect some driftwood! I've never seen any as uniform and straight as yours though!
ReplyDeleteThis is unrelated, but just thought I'd mention that it's a bit hard to see links in your blog posts (such as the one showing where you got the idea for the trivet), because of the colour of the font. Maybe you could make it darker or a brighter colour? Just a suggestion :)
love this evi! here where i live at the beach, i've seen many things made of driftwood (i drag pieces home often too) but never a trivit. perfect!
ReplyDeleteThankyou for all your kind comments! I thought it was a quick and very nifty idea too.... and yes Aleta and Tanya, I think I might make a few of these as gifts too!
ReplyDeleteBonnie, I will give your suggestion some thought - it shows up nice and yellow on my screen but maybe thats because I've already been there. The colour may be different when it hasn't been visited before.
Beautiful trivet, I love driftwood also. We try to bring some home every time we go to the coast, I tuck it throughout my garden , and in bookcase nooks. I will have to remember this trivet craft, we are planning a beach weekend in March. Great post!
ReplyDeleteI think you are very clever! I love that you made something for free, with something you love, and now when you look at it you can think of the beach. Brilliant!
ReplyDeleteoh this is lovely...it makes me want to magic myself small and sail away on it as a raft :-)
ReplyDeleteOhh that's what it was for! I was sort of wondering what use it had when I saw it the other day!! maybe you should make one for my new house.. there isn't any drift wood out that way!! ;)
ReplyDeleteI. Love. This!
ReplyDeleteI am going to make one for my picnic table this summer.
Thank you very much for sharing.
Wonderful, I love the rustic look of your trivet! (I love a good excuse to collect sticks!)
ReplyDeleteLovely idea. And so simple. Staring me in the face. No driftwood here, but plenty of dead grapevine and fallen box elder branches. Clever girl.
ReplyDeleteK - I wish I had thought of this...sigh... but I borrowed the idea!! I am happy to have inspired so many other eco lovies to have a go THOUGH, because it IS a bit like 'oh, why didn't I think of THAT before!!'
ReplyDeleteoh, how i love driftwood! we never come home from the river without :-) we made one of those table mats during the holidays as well. the kid's wanted to use it as a raft! your's looks great. and i love the purple pot!
ReplyDeleteThankyou naturmama, we got the idea from your very lovely blog!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great idea!!
This is great! I'm thinking we could make some pretty nifty place mats like this. Thank you for sharing. (And, once again, you take some really incredible photographs.)
ReplyDeleteThanks Dionne - every now and again I really like my photo's but truly, they are mostly a fluke!! One day I'll have a better understanding of my camera....I hope.....
