Holy house

We had a relaxing weekend away, the Best Man and I. One of the highlights was this lonely old church surrounded by sheep and fields of grass near Carrick.

Beautiful countryside,
lichen encrusted headstones,
dried grasses blowing in the wind,
memories of earlier folk and older times.

Who were they? How did they die? How did they live?

Are they remembered with love? Are they remembered at all?

Life and death are interesting concepts. We are here on earth for a set time and when we go, we are mourned by our closest loved ones for a time.
The lives of those we leave behind go on in much the same way, day by day, but the gap we leave behind slowly closes over until there is just a faint scar of memories.
Within a generation we are, perhaps, a fond recollection and another generation later, just a lichen covered headstone in a grassy field. A life forgotten but a life hopefully well lived.

  2. You're so right and it's funny when you look at it like that. Why do I stress and worry and feel like everything I need to do, matters so much! Hey I could just spend a day in bed and the world would keep on turning. And here I was thinking I was important. I'll be turning the thoughts in this post over in my head for quite some time, I need to find the balance.

  4. Thanks everyone - I think about this from time to time and I'm always left wondering about the ebb and flow of life.
Funnily enough Linda, I hadn't really looked at it in the terms you mentioned, but yes, maybe what I do is important to me but I shouldn't look at it as being so important overall iykwim? Thinking aloud here.... but not really conveying it properly...oh well.
